Review of rail rates
Wellington reporter Government subsidisation of South Island rail freight rates is being examined as part of the review of the unit rate freight rebate scheme. This was revealed in Parliament by the Minister of Regional Development, Mr Burke, in reply to questions by the Opposition spokesman on South Island affairs, Mr Warren Cooper (Nat, Otago). Mr Cooper had asked when the Government would introduce South Island assistance to enable existing rail freight users to be offered a specially reduced freight rate over and above the quantity they paid full rates on in the year before the introduction of the scheme. This move was promised in Labour’s 1984 policy document.
