Youth forum on race
PA Auckland A youth forum held by the Race Relations Office in Auckland drew a good response from schools throughout New Zealand. The two-day forum which was opened by the Race Relations Conciliator, Mr Wally Hirsh, was attended by pupils from more than 50 schools. The theme for the meeting was “New Zealand through a hundred pairs of eyes.” Students were to give their ideas on their roles in a multi-cultural society. The pupils came from different cultures and backgrounds and some of them had little experience with Maori or Pacific Islanders, the education co-ordinator, Mr Eddie Twist, said. Guest speakers were invited to address the group and this was followed by workshops and discussions. Pupils from outside Auckland were sponsored by the Conciliator’s Office and local students by their schools.
