Boult takes title
The New Zealand junior representative and Tasman No. 1 golfer, Elliot Boult, of Blenheim, won the Commercial Union national under-21 title at the Whitford Park course in Auckland on Sunday. After two rounds of the 54hole tournament, Boult had a six-stroke lead over the Christchurch club player, Ken Collett. However, Boult faded to a four-over par 75 in the last round and was forced to a play-off by the Titirangi golfer, Brent Smith, who had a brilliant 68 in the third round to finish on 219 with Boult. The under-18 championship went to Lucas Parsons, one of two Australians competing. His score of 222 would have put him third in the under-21 event Leading scores:— 219—E. Also in Auckland during the week-end was the prestigious 72-hole Stewart Gold Cup tournament at The Grange. That, too, was decided in a play-off. Gary Steigmeier (Remuera), who started the final round five shots clear of Stephen Partridge (Manukau), dropped eight shots on the last six holes and Partridge tied the scores when he chipped in from 40m at the last. Steigmeier, aged 22, paired the second extra hole to take tiiak.trophy when Partridge coind do no better than a two-over.
