New Brighton favoured
The Bascik New Brighton men’s A team should easily win the annual Takahe-to-Akaroa road running relay on Saturday, after taking the national relay title over the Kaimi Ranges near Tauranga last Saturday. The uphill specialist, John Hellemans, will not be in the team this time, but there is ample depth in Rob Mulcahy, Don Greig, Grant Hardy, Grant McEwen, Richard Ayson, Alan McLaren and Peter Renner. University 1, which won the national title on the Takahe-to-Akaroa course last year, was a disappointing fourth over the Kaimai, and
will be looking to improve on that performance. University 1 will have Phil Clode, Kevin O’Sullivan, Elliot Drayton, lan Milne, David Burridge, Bruce Meder, L. Fraser and Pat Meffan. University 1 beat Bascik New Brighton by about five minutes in the open women’s relay last year but there should not be much between the two old rival clubs on Saturday. Mary O’Connor will take the tough last lap for University, while New Brighton’s top runner, Sue Bruce, is on the uphill sixth lap. Sumner 1 and .Christchurch should vie for third spot.
