Grosvenor has

first trial winner

Grosvenor, the classic performing sire-son of Sir Tristram, landed his first trial winner in South Australia earlier this week. Sashiko, a Grosvenor filly from the Sharp Edge mare Stilleto Walk, beat 10 rivals home over 1000 m on Monday. The filly, which is prepared by Adelaide trainer Phillip Read, established a 4*4 length break on her rivals and won easing down by a length. Sold for $120,000 on account of Ra Ora Stud Ltd at January’s National Sale at Trentham, Sashiko was purchased by Philippa Duncan Bloodstock on behalf of prominent owner Don Dick. She is likely to make her race-day debut in the listed Dequetteville Stakes at Morphetville on Monday, September 29. The event is the first two-year-old stakes race of the season in South Australia. News of the win has been met with jubiliation by David Benjamin, manager of the now publicly owned Field House Stud. Field House stand Grosvenor on behalf of a syndicate which is headed by Benjamin and outlaid SNZ2 million to secure

the treble Group one-win-ning stallion at the end of his three-year-old racing career.

Grosvenor (Sir Tristram — My Tricia by Hermes), a brother to the ill-fated National Gallery, captured the Victoria Derby, Caulfield Guineas and V.R.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes (all Group 1) among his six victories for earnings of $Au5t477,350. Grosvenor’s first crop were the subject of keen demand at this year’s selected sales series. At Trentham he was the 10th leading sire on average over-all and second leading first season sire behind Prince Echo. His Trentham draft averaged $73,787, with a top price of $200,000, and a huge aggregate of $2.4 million for 33 yearlings sold. At Waikato Grosvenor averaged $23,444 with a top price of $50,000. Grosvenor’s only other known trial runner to date is a filly from Sharp Walk, a close relative of Sashiko, who is in the care of Neville Begg. Raced by the Vela brothers of Cambridge, the filly ran 4th in a trial held in Sydney last week.
