Subversive activities

Sir, — In answer to Sue Hunt (September 9), we only invite to New Zealand internationally recognised experts — people whose honesty and integrity can be readily established through rational investigation. People like Peter Hayes and Lyuba Zarsky, of Nautilus; Colonel David Hackworth, one of America's most decorated military veterans; Dr Jim Falk, senior lecturer in history and philosophy at the University of Wollongong and author of “Taking Australia Off The Map”; and Ralph McGehee, a highly decorated retired, 25year CJ.A. veteran, are all dedicated to helping prevent nuclear annihilation and preserving democratic freedoms from dictatorships of the Right or Left. They have all given freely of their time to help New Zealand become nuclear-free because this will help create a just world peace, free of nuclear war threat. New Zealand can develop an independent, nuclear-free foreign policy and not be subverted by the K.G.B. or C.I.A. if we remain committed and vigilant. — Yours, etc., LARRY ROSS. Secretary-manager, N.Z. Nuclear Free Zone Committee September 9, 1986. Sir, —Sue Hunt (September 9), drew attention to the numerous visits to this country by foreign peaceniks. I agree with her, inasmuch as they represent an intrusion by the international subversive apparatus. There were two relevant news items in one recent issue of my local paper. One item concerned the visit of yet another political priest, this one from Nicaragua, while the other item reported a visit by the founder of the Philippines Communist Party. These are only two more of a swarm which includes Sue Hunt’s choice pair. It is quite apparent that, viewed from abroad, we are already deeply enmeshed in the Soviet net. Hence the arrival of so many red carpet-baggers. Hence also the gaffe by the visiting Soviet Deputy Minister, who thought the time was ripe to suggest some form of military alliance. He was waved away only because he was a bit premature. Yours, etc., JOHN H. LENCH. Nelson, September 9, 1986. Sir,—Sue Hunt (September 9) shows a comical sense of what constitutes subversion. What Ralph McGehee’s visit has demonstrated is the fact that many conservatives are not concerned about democracy at all. They would rather be pawns of the

American super-Power. For true democrats, however, Mr McGehee pointed out the subversive processes already under way. For example, a former C.I.A. deputy director, Dr Ray Cline, is head of a so-called A.N.Z.U.S. think-tank targeted on New Zealand. Dr Cline is on record as describing the way the C.I.A. worked with the Australian intelligence service to destabilise the Whitlam Government through the use of embarrassing information leaked to the press (“The Ties That Bind,” by J. Richelson and D. Ball). Other subversive operations include the United States Information Service’s efforts to encourage political activity detrimental to our nuclear-free zone (May 22). There is indeed something very rotten going on in New Zealand. —Yours, etc., D. K. SMALL. September 10, 1986.
