Cheating on car mileages ‘widespread’

PA Wellington Winding back car odometers could be big business in New Zealand, according to a national motoring magazine, “New Zealand Car.” While it was difficult to get exact figures, some car dealers said the practice of winding back odometers was quite widespread, the magazine said.

The police said, that with modem cars worth thousands of dollars, the offence was potentially very serious. “Flicking” back mileage in cars one or two years old, from 50,000 km to 15,000 km for example, could increase a used car’s value as much as $3OOO. In many cases it was difficult to tell if a car’s total distance recorder had been altered.

“Unless a tamperer is stupid enough to let his speedo fiddling show up when he fills in his car’s mileage on the yearly registration form, he is likely to get away with the dishonesty,” said the magazine.
