Tuvalu trust fund gets $1/2M bodst
PA Wellington The Government yesterday announced a $500,000 gift to the Tuvalu trust fund, one of a number of allocations from the Rainbow Warrior compensation money. The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, announced allocations totalling $788,500 for a number of projects, including the $125,000 given last week to establish a study of the effects of a nuclear winter. Mr Lange said before a press conference in Wellington that Tuvalu was
one of the smallest and poorest South Pacific mini States. To promote economic independence it had sought support from international donors to set up a trust fund, which would reduce its dependence on aid. A further $130,000 would go to the Polynesian Trust Fund, established in 1984 to promote a better understanding of historical and ongoing links in Polynesia, Mr Lange said. The Rarotonga seismological facility, mean-
while, received $25,000 to improve transmission to Wellington of data captured on the recording devices.
It was also proposed to publish a pamphlet outlining the history and rationale of New Zealand’s antinuclear stance and $B5OO had been set aside for this.
Mr Lange said two further announcements about allocations from the $l3 million French compensation settlement would be made at a later date.
