High country land issue ‘simple’
Wellington reporter
The administration of South Island high country is a very simple issue although competing interests have made it confusing, said the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, yesterday. Mr Lange said administrative changes had to ensure that the land remained in Crown ownership, that Land Settlement Board classifications were taken notice of, and that no existing lease-holder was forced to surrender land.
Land which was surrendered after negotiation with lease-holders for environmental reasons would be administered by the new Conservation Department.
Other surrendered land which was productive would be administered by the Land Developments and Management Cor->> poration. r ' : The corporation would' have responsibility for managing Crown rights to land which continued to be leased, having regard to the environmental requirements set down by the department.
