Cold, wet winter
A cold, wet winter in Canterbury was marked by flooding, severe frosts, and heavy snowfalls. Rainfall during June,
July, and August was 100 mm above the 170 mm average, with heavy falls and flooding in areas of Canterbury on three occasions.
Almost a quarter of the winter’s rain fell on July 6 resulting in severe flooding in north-eastern parts of Christchurch.
Although June had only just over half of its average rainfall, more than double the normal July total fell during the first 11 days of the month. Rainfall during August was well over iy 2 times the normal monthly figure. Temperatures during winter were slightly below average, particularly at night during June. Christchurch suffered a — 9.9 deg. frost on June 14. Cold southerly to southeasterly fronts swept Canterbury often during the winter bringing snow to low levels. Snow fell in some low-lying areas of Christchurch on June 15 and blanketed the foothills.
