First win at Ashburton

By

alex mcmillan

The dashing hurdler, Cappiemore, credited his Atarua part-owner and trainer, Kevin Doolan, with his first win on the Ashburton course when successful in the Chelandry Stud Hurdles yesterday. Doolan had not raced a horse on the the MidCanterbury course until the first day of the Ashburton meeting on Saturday, when Cappiemore resumed racing by finishing ninth in the open class 1600 m event. Cappiemore’s win yesterday, his 12th in total and third over hurdles

from just four starts in that role, advanced his stake earnings to $41,825, a figure that he seems sure to advance even further in the next few weeks.

Cappiemore was taken straight to the front yesterday by Paul Richards and was rated to perfection by the Wingatuibased horseman. He gave the son of Thoreau and Mixed Herbs a “breather” in the middle stages of the 2800 m event and extracted enough from the seven-year-old in the run home to beat Magic Eagle, which had led briefly on the home turn, by a length. Macho Man was a battling third, four lengths back, ahead of Paddle. Doolan, who races Cappiemore, a $l3OO purchase as a foal, in partnership with his wife, Alma, plans to give the bay another hurdles outing at Washdyke on Saturday. He is reluctant to start him against the open class handicappers unless necessary and is likely to restrict him to highweight events during the spring.
