Soccer targets
Christchurch Brother United has already set one club record in this year’s Rothmans Soccer League, and by the finish might have established two more, one individual and one collective.
The three points it gained from beating NZ Permanent Gisborne at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Sunday carried United to 37, which is two more than its previous best effort, in 1884.
Its victory was its eleventh in the league, and with three rounds remaining can set a new mark for wins in a league season, as well as winning the championship for the fourth time.
United’s best achievement in the previous 16 years of the national club competition was 13 wins, in both 1973 and 1978, the season it last won the title.
John Hanson has notched 14 of United’s 37 goals, putting him two behind the mark established in 1979 by his team-mate, Johan Verweij. Hanson is joint leader of the individual
goal-scorers table, with Greg Brown (National Mutual Miramar) and Andy Deeley (Gisborne).
