Energy trio seek Japanese deal
PA New Plymouth Three Ministry of Energy officials will go to Japan this month to conclude negotiations about the proposed $lOO million durene plant at Motunui, the “Daily News” reports. After months of talks with interested parties, including Fletcher Challenge, the Ministry is now confident of getting an agreement with the Japanese companies concerned in the construction of the plant to extract and process durene — a natural by-product of the Synfuel process. It is expected the final proposal will be consid-
ered by the Cabinet in October, soon after the officials return, the New Plymouth newspaper says. Durene can be used in plastics manufacture. New Zealand has the potential to produce 35 times the world supply by using the heavy gasoline stream at Synfuel. The recently appointed general manager of the Ministry’s gas and geothermal trading group Mr Dave Marriott, will go to Japan on September 15 with the assistant general manager (new projects), Mr Tom Young, and the durene project officer, Mr Garth Broome.
