Local government

Sir, —Bob Andrews’ suggestion (August 30) that horses have feathers is about as intelligent as

his views on the freedom of action i of Labour’s local body candidates. His knowledge on this appears to be limited to the views of a minor party official in Manukau or the mischievous poppycock of a recent editorial in this newspaper. The policy to which local Labour candidates are pledged was made by and for Christchurch people. Any allegation that I, as one of those candidates, could be told what to say or do by outsiders, within or outside the party, would be greeted by those who know me with laughter at about force 13 on the Richter scale. The same goes for my fellow candidates. Most important of all is the fact that Labour councils alone have a track record demonstrating their responsiveness to local viewpoints, including those on motorways, parks, and rates. — Yours, etc., D. J. O’ROURKE. September 1, 1986.
