Residents want Railways to improve line
Councils should pressure the Railways Corporation to improve the Main North railway line from Riccarton to Redwood, a public meeting in Waimairi District decided last evening. The corporation should finance the work with some of the money it would get from selling land it had intended to use for the Styx-Sockbum railway loop, about 25 residents decided.
Noise, traffic barriers, and landscaping were all areas in which the corporation could improve the line.
Residents wanted trains slowed and to have the use of whistles and levelcrossing bells stopped between midnight and 6 a.m. They wanted barrier arms at level-crossings which could remove the need to use whistles and bells.
Investigating the use of concrete sleepers rather than timber ones to further reduce noise was also suggested.
More trees, better landscaping, and more
care with spraying weeds were also suggested as improvements. The meeting voted unanimously to ask the Canterbury United Council to work with the Railways Corporation on behalf of residents of Waimairi District, Riccarton Borough, and Christchurch City.
