Car and train collide
A man escaped with minor injuries when the car he was driving was in a collision with a train on a Christchurch levelcrossing yesterday. ■ The car was a write-off, according to a spokesman for the St John ambulance service.. ' ’The man, who was the sole occupant of the car, had an extremely lucky escape, the spokesman said.
The driver was admitted to Christchurch Hospital, examined, and discharged . several hours later. It appeared that both vehicles were travelling slowly when they collided on the Ensors Road levelcrossing about 2.40 p.m., said a railway spokesman. He said that the railway barriers were down and the train, a shunting engine with carriages, had sounded its hooter before approaching the crossing. When the car hit the train it spun 360 degrees, he said.
A full report on the accident would be made, the spokesman said.
