Wet, cool August
PA Wellington The weather throughout New Zealand was wetter and cooler than normal last month, according to the Meterological Service. Temperatures to September were o.4deg. above average compared with o.sdeg. above average for the same period last year. Canterbury was the wettest region, with .115 per cent more rainfall than average, and heavy falls on August 10 and 11; and the coolest, with a mean temperature of l.ldeg. below average. The wettest places were Timaru (230 per cent above average), Kaikoura (up 165 per cent), Hororata to Mount John area (up 145 per cent), and Christchurch (up 80 per cent). The driest places were Hokitika, Otira, Franz Josef and Milford Sound, all with 65 per cent below average rainfall, and Queenstown, with 55 per cent less than average. The West Coast was the warmest region with a mean temperature o.2deg. above average. Temperatures at Haast were o.7deg. above average and at Franz Josef o.6deg. above average.
