Fire chief honoured
Fire brigade officers from throughout New Zealand form a guard of honour (top) while the coffin of Mr Leslie Osmond, a former chief fire officer in Christchurch, is placed on an old Dennis fire engine from Ferrymead. More than 350 people attended the funeral service yesterday at St Michael’s church, Lichfield Street, and watched as the fire engine departed (bottom). During his sermon, the chaplain of the Fire Service, the Rev. Peter
Shields, said that Mr Osmond had served 41 years as a fireman. He joined the volunteer fire brigade in Dunedin in 1928. “Mr Osmond was deeply concerned with the morale of his staff under his command,” said Father Shields. The committal of the body was made by the vicar of St Michael’s, the Rev. Ivan Smith.
