Boycott finds form
NZPA-Reuter Scarborough The former English opener, Geoff Boycott, playing his first first-class match for almost two months after a hand injury, scored a chanceless 81 for Brian Close’s XI against the New Zealand touring team at Scarborough yesterday. Boycott, 46 in October, hit nine fours, mostly off the spinners, in his 205 min
innings on the opening day of the three-day match. He put on 68 for the first wicket with Sadiq Mohammed, who made 37, and 87 for the third wicket with Javed Miandad, second highest scorer with 41. Accurate bowling by the touring team, who were without the main strike bowler, Richard Hadlee, backed by keen catching, restricted
Close’s XI to 257 all out. The off-spinner, John Bracewell, took four for 51. Trevor Franklin and Bruce Edgar took New Zealand to 10 for no wicket before bad light ended play half an hour early.
Scores: Brian Close’s XI 257 (G. Boycott 81, J. G. Bracewell four for 51), New Zealand 10 for no wicket.
