R. and D. call supported
Mr Jim Higgins, national president of the Computer Society, expressed his society’s support for the call for more research and development into information technology made by a Professor Dordick at a recent seminar sponsored by Victoria University of Wellington.
Professor Dordick had said that the declining terms of trade for New Zealand had put at risk the continuance of our present social structure. Information technology was available to help establish new industries or revitalise old ones but to do this effectively a com-
prehensive research programme was essential. However, the present climate for research and development in New Zealand was a poor one. Mr Higgins noted that this was exactly what the Computer Society had been saying for some time. "I hope that now someone from overseas is saying the same thing we may get some action,” he said. He added that Professor Dordick’s comments were also very timely coming as they did at the same time as Sir David Beattie’s committee was looking at science and technology in New Zealand. ’
