AUSTRALIA BHP highlights trading

NZPA-AP Sydney Share prices closed mostly higher on Australian sharemarkets, but interest was selective and trading volumes were relatively thin. The highlight was the volatile trading in BHP which slumped 52c in early trading as Melbourne broker, Potts West, began offloading scrip just before the mid-session break. The stock closed 26c lower at 760, after reaching a day’s low of 736. Turnover was nearly 2 million shares, which included a special sale of 340,000 shares at 740 c a share by broker, McCaughan and Dyson. The sharp fall prompted an exchange inquiry tag to be placed against the listing, but company officials said they were unaware of any factor that may explain the fall. Other companies involved in the BHP saga were moderately traded, with Adsteam rising 20c to 1220 and Elders IXL up 2c to 487. BHP’s major shareholder Bell Resources eased 5c to 490 and the Bell Group lost 20c to 1040. Selective buying interest highlighted the insurance, banking and oil sectors and companies which were expected to announce or had announced healthy end of year profit-results. FA! — which reported a record sAust72.s million profit for the year ended June 30, an increase of 155.8 per cent — closed 20c up on 730. Edward Lumley also rose 20c to 750 and APA added 10c to 310. Among the banks, Westpac climbed 10c to 470, the ANZ

9c to 504 and the National Australia 6c to 546. Brokers said trading banks were under pressure to lift their prime lending rates this week and this may induce across the board interest rate rises.
