Strike led to new island airline
PA Auckland A strike by Air New Zealand cabin crew helped push the Cook Islands Government into setting up its own airline, a Cook Islands official has said. The airline — which made its inaugural flight to Auckland two weeks ago — had its beginning in the Air New Zealand cabin crew strike of Christmas, 1984. The six-day strike was over a new roster system.
At a function in Auckland to mark the new service, the Cook Islands representative in New Zealand, Mr laveta Short, said the strike was one of the reasons the new airline, Cook Islands International, was formed. The Auckland-Raro-tonga route had been very worth-while for Air New Zealand for the last two years, but Cook Islanders had a lot of problems with ■ the flights, Mr Short said. ■ These included delays and the timing of flights.
