Grave humour Visitors to Kryal Castle, near Ballarat, can experience a typical example of Australian humour by wandering around the “graves” in the castle’s cemetery. For instance, epitaphs like this appear on the headstones: "Here lies the form of Mary Charlotte, born a virgin, died a harlot. For 10 long years she kept her virginity, which is almost a record in this vicinity.” And: “In memory of Miss Steak (Diane), the butcher’s daughter who died at the prime of her life.” The castle also features a daily programme of “hangings” and “whippings” of buxom wenches.
Gilding the lily
The art of public relations has been given an enlightened definition by Sandy Gardiner, British Airways’ public affairs manager in Canada. “Public relations,” he said, “is
the technique of telling someone to go to hell — in a way that makes him look forward to the journey.” * * * Vancouver fares Air New Zealand has extended its recently announced “two together” fares across the Pacific to Vancouver as well as Los Angeles. ♦ ♦ ♦ Vikings up the creek Keep an eye open for vikings on the Avon. A recent brochure promoting Royal Viking Line cruises promises a rare voyage around our waters. It states: “In New Zealand two musts are Auckland with its grassy domain and Wellington, the capital complete with Parliament House. Sail the 10 miles of the River Avon through Christchurch before heading north to the Bay of Islands ...” Out with the Count Week-ends that could be a pain in the neck have been planned by the Dracula Society in North Yorkshire this month and for several dates next year. For around $lBO the week-end package includes a complimentary crucifix and garlic corm and accommodation for two nights; films of horror; a walking Dracula Trail tour of Whitby; all meals and a costume ball and banquet.
