Labour policy

Sir, —When Japan was ferociously attacking China with Western approval (even Roosevelt felt it would help economic recovery for China to be “opened up”) the excuse of over-crowding prompted Anglican Bishop Cherrington to suggest inviting 10 million Japanese, as a Christian duty, to settle in our underpopulated country. The real danger that our whole economic structure could be dismantled like the Kawerau paper mill shows that we in this run-down welfare State have no more right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness than the starving Ethiopians. The alternative is to demolish the stateless, worldwide power which can spend billions on armaments and waging war for profit, but spare nothing for the famine-stricken millions dependent on pop-music chirity. Elected government is ouwnly shield, but Labour has

chosen to support the rich man’s table philosophy, forgetting crumbs have joined other diminishing returns. — Yours, etc., VARIAN J. WILSON. August 29, 1986.
