Subversive activities

Sir,—My baited letter of August 25, in reply to D. K. Small’s correspondence on democracy and the alleged C.I.A. manipulation, seems to have snared Susan Taylor, the champion of the Soviets. I remind her that, but for the Americans she so vehemently despises, and their defeat of the Japanese in the Coral Sea Battle of 1943, she would not now be enjoying the freedom that goes with our democracy. I am also astounded at her statement that America has installed 75 per cent of the world’s dictatorships since 1945. What is her answer thfen to the Soviet dominance of most of Europe, Africa and Central America? But for the last bulwark against Soviet expansion — America and her Western Allies — we would indeed be in a very sorry state. — Yours, etc.,

PETER SHEEHAN. August 29, 1986.
