Dusk

By

JOCELYN RATTRAY,

aged 13 The sun falls dying, wounded, To the crest of a distant mountain, And slowly, gently it sinks, Into the death-darkness of night. Two lovers stand on a deserted hill-top, Rustling their golden leaves in cheerful conversation, Standing alone, but still together, Standing in a dream. Birds fly homeward, westward, northward, Swooping, diving, soaring, Dipping, To their nests. Cows munch dreamily, Staring at the sunset, That glints like sequins, On rainbow coloured silk. The river runs tinkling, Over stones, like diamonds, The river looks icy, And it falls tinkling, trickling. Horse and foal standing alone, Mother and child standing together, Sharing secret secrets, Till the night is over.
