Luxury, at a price

Mr Roy Prescott checks a $250,0M 1986 Bentley Mulsanne, made by Rolls-Royce, after it was unpacked from a container at a Christchurch dealer’s workshop. Archibalds has just secured a franchise for Bentley and Rolls-Royce cars in Christchurch. The Bentley Mulsanne is the first of a series of new Bentley cars to be imported.

The Mulsanne is powered by a 6.75 litre V 8 engine, and purrs along at 38km/h (24 miles an hour) at only IMO r.p.m.

The car has all the Rolls-Royce refinements,

but is more “standard” than the faster Mulsanne Turbo, which will be imported soon.

It takes three months to build each Bentley Mulsanne. The owner’s manual comes as a cassette tape as well as a book.

The speedometer reads up to 220km/h (138 miles an hour), but the Bentley Mulsanne was built for luxury. It has electrically adjusted seats, electric windows, air-conditioning, and traditional figured walnut dashboard and door cappings. The seats are upholstered with in-dividually-selected hides.
