Burst water pipes anger residents

Some Achilles Street residents in Shirley are “fed up” with cuts to their water supply over the last 15 months because of burst water pipes in the street

They are concerned that the water supply would continue to be cut off for hours after further pipe bursts if the main water pipe is not renewed.

The Christchurch City Council’s water works and services engineer, Mr Ivan Crosbie. said last

evening that aging water pipes meant the council had to deal with up to 10,000 water leaks each year.

“When the number of leaks in a water pipe gets to be more than one per metre of pipe the council sets about renewing the pipe immediately,” he said. “Otherwise we renew pipes as funds permit and a pipe like the one in Achilles Street would cost about $60,000 a kilometre to renew.”
