Canty wins debate
PA Wellington The University of Canterbury beat Victoria in the New Zealand University Debating Council’s eighty-second annual championships, held in the Parliamentary legislative chamber on Thursday evening. The win netted them the prestigious Joynt Scroll, and a team member, Rachel Hayward, also received the Best Speaker Award.
Canterbury took the negative and Victoria the affirmative in the debate on “Rather be red than
watch Dynasty.” The debate was adjudicated by three lawyers, Messrs Stephen Kos, Jock Farnslow and Richard Baker, all former university debaters and winners of the Joynt Scroll. Before the debate, Victoria and Canterbury universities were fighting it out for first place in the New Zealand Universities Winter Tournament, and annual event involving sport and cultural Con-
tests. The debate gave Canterbury the extra point it needed to win.
