Many tax forms returned
PA Wellington More than 80 per cent of businesses and organisations have sent their goods and services tax registration forms back to the Inland Revenue Department, the assistant commissioner, Mr David Henry, has said. So far 382,000 of the 458,000 forms sent out in March have been returned, he said. The forms were sent to businesses and organisations known or thought to have incomes of more than $24,000. Mr Henry said that of the forms processed so far, 182,000 of the senders had been registered to pay GST. Another 38,000 forms were still to be processed, and the rest were not liable to pay GST.
With just a month left to register for GST, a lot of forms were coming in, he said.
On present trends, only about 50,000 businesses and organisations seemed likely to miss the deadline. These would be followed up by letter, Mr Henry said.
