Diplomat’s son claims immunity after crash
PA Wellington The son of a Cook Islands diplomat in New Zealand claimed diplomatic immunity after a crash in a Diplomatic Corps car in a Wellington suburb, says a Minister of Transport spokesman. Senior Traffic Sergeant Tony Collins said the car and a Wellington City Council bus were involved
in a collision on Broadway, Miramar, about 10 p.m. on Friday evening. The car then spun out, crossed a pavement and crashed into a one-metre high concrete wall. The driver was taken to Pearse House for questioning, ■ but was freed when his identity had been confirmed, said Senior Traffic Sergeant
Collins. The basis of his release was diplomatic immunity, which applies' to diplomats’ immediate family. No-one was injured in the accident. The bus driver, aged 25, Was the sole occupant of the bus which sustained. damage to its front bumper. The diplomatic car, which was a diplomatic vehicle registered to the Cook Islands, was badly damaged at the rear. Two people, both males, were in the car.
