Blyme stylish Ashburton winner

By

ALEX McMILLAN

Results from the first day of the Ashburton County Racing Club’s meeting at Ashburton on Saturday appear unlikely, to be of any real value when assessing prospects for the two feature events on the second day of the meeting tomorrow.

Blyme ran out a stylish winner of the Star Time Caterers Handicap (1600 m the principal flat event on Saturday’s programme, recording what seemed a first class trial for tomorrow’s $BOOO A.I.C. International Ash-, burton Cup. After the race the gelding was, however, declared a non-starter for that event, his connections intimating that the seven-year-old would instead be aimed at the $lO,OOO Centennial Marlborough Cup at Blenheim later this month.

Several hopefuls for the Ashburton club’s feature race for three-year-olds tomorrow, the $lB,OOO D.B. A.L.T. John Grigg Classic, were also put through their paces on Saturday, but none achieved a high enough level of performance on a soft track to suggest that they could be rated as realistic chances to pressure talented types such as Ruff, Sea War and Mitchell Sage in that 1410 m event.

Blyme’s win was a continuation of a highly successful association between his Riccarton partowner and trainer, “Tex” Kenneally, and the now Christchurch-based veteran jockey, John Dowling, who does much of the work with the Kenneally horses and acts as an “adviser” when mapping out programmes for the small team.

Saturday’s win was the ninth from 60 starts to date for the durable Blyme, which is raced in partnership by Kenneally and his wife, Shirley. It was the sixth occasion that Dowling has been the successful rider.

Blyme, after settling in a mid-field position, appeared to be under some pressure to improve early in the run home on Saturday, but responded generously to Dowling’s vigorous urgings in the concluding stages to win by a length from another solid finisher in Ariage, with the raging favourite, Black Arrow, half a length back third.

Ariage’s run, his first from the stable of former jockey, Alan Reeves, augured well for his jumping debut, which may be in the Chelandry Hurdles tomorrow, but Black Arrow had to be regarded as slightly disappointing. “Every chance, but he was the victim of circumstances again, reaching the lead too soon,” said Grant Davison of the Garth Jackson-trained runner. Black Arrow’s stable-

mate, Samasaan, made ground late for seventh, a run which pleased his rider, Chris Johnson. The gelding, the winner of last season’s New Zealand and Wellington Cups, was paraded in burly condition and is likely to be given another outing in New Zealand before leaving for Australia in late October, where his main mission will be the $1 million Fosters Melbourne Cup at Flemington in November.

Kallista and Bijou Lady completed a “hat-trick” of winning rides for John Dowling on Saturday. Kallista, trained at Ashburton by her part-owner, Miss Jill Watson, was extending an already excellent record on her home course, having captured a double at the corresponding meeting last year.

The win was the Native Turn mare’s fourth from just 11 starts to date for Miss Watson, who races the five-year-old in partnership with her sister, Mrs Jenny Gough. Kallista was prominent from the outset in Saturday’s 1200 m White Robe Lodge Stud Handicap, and the issue was settled on the home turn when Dowling kicked her out to a commanding lead, one she never looked like surrendering. She had more than two lengths to spare at the finish over Sky Rocket, which shaped attractively in his first start for more than six month?. The favourite, The Mean Machine, returned his usual honest effort to finish third, clear of Schwepping. Bijou Lady, a daughter of Noble Bijou and the former smart mare, Lady Belinda, cleared maiden ranks at her ninth attempt when she outfinished her rivals in the Nottingham Park Stud Maiden No. 3. The five-year-old is trained at Riccarton by her part-owner, Miss Colleen Shirley. Palatable Prince kept his unbeaten record intact when he scored a narrow but nevertheless meritorious win in the Morwenstow Handicap on Saturday.

The four-year-old, trained on the Ashburton course by a part-owner, Brian Kirk, produced just enough near the finish for Jodie Woledge to take a nose decision over Burdite, thus recording his third win from as many attempts.

The success of Palatable Prince was the third on the day for stock of the Riccarton-based stallion, Palatable, with Blyme and Extra Bright having represented him successfully earlier in the day.
