Air N.Z. takes A grade badminton title
A 7-1 win over the bottom team, Christchurch 11, was more than sufficient to give Air New Zealand the 1986 A grade inter-club badminton title on Saturday, ; Air N.Z. began the last round with a four-point advantage over its only rival, the defending champion, Railway. However, after the loss of its No. 1 man, Graham Sercombe, to his . Canterbury Division one team-mate, Trevor Campbell, Air N.Z. was rarely in difficulties.
As it turned out, a weakened Railway team went down, 5-3, to Hagley I, its third defeat of the 21-round competition, j | The other teams to end the competition on a winning note were Christchurch I and Hagley 11. Christchurch had a tight battle with South Brighton, before edging through on a countback of games, 10-8. However Hagley’s success against Bryndwr-Y.M.C.A. was somewhat hollow — three of its victories were achieved by default.
Final points: Air N.Z. 237, Railway 223, Christchurch I 181, Bryndwr 146, Hagley II 119, Hagley I 103, South Brighton 93, Christchurch II 74.
