Woolston, Cashmere win
. Woolston W.M.C. and KLM Cashmere had preliminaryround victories over Nomads United and New Brighton in the Hertz League soccer knock-out competition on Saturday.
Two second-half goals gave Woolston a 2-0 win at Tullet Park. Robin Rutherford scored the first from a freekick by Mike Millward. The mid-fielder, Graeme Binks, added the second with a penalty.
Cashmere had a seven-goal battle with Brighton at Beckenham Park, finally sneaking through, 4-3, with a goal in the last minute of extra time. Goals by Dominic Robinson and Phil Lawton had Brighton 2-0 ahead early in the second half. However, Steve Welford
and Wayne Newsome pegged back the . advantage with goals for Cashmere. Tony Orpwood scored from the penalty spot to put Cashmere ahead for the first time midway through the second half, but Andy Daffin equalised for Brighton shortly before the end of normal time. The deciding goal again came from a penalty. Orpwood was fouled, took the spot kick himself and scored. South Canterbury moved up the southern league table on Saturday when it beat the third-placed Shamrock, 2-1, in a deferred match in Timaru. Paul Sherratt scored Shamrock’s goal, while Simon Belworthy got both South Canterbury’s goals.
Second-round matches in the knock-out competition, set down for next week-end, will pair Cashmere and South Canterbury, Woolston and Shamrock, Budget House Rangers and Sharp Copiers Western, and Classique Technical and Andas Haiswell United. However, Haiswell will be in Dunedin for the first leg of the league championship play-off against Caversham. After winning all 18 of its matches in the premier division league. Bumdale United was eliminated from the knock-out competition on Saturday by Riccarton, 4-2. In other games, Western beat Woolston, 4-1; Christchurch United beat Shamrock, 7-0; and Cashmere beat Rangers, 2-1. :
