Jujnovich apparatus winner

Mark Jujnovich, of Auckland, won the apparatus finals in the international men’s grade at the Choysa New Zealand gymnastic championships which finished at Cowles Stadium on Saturday. Jujnovich failed on one apparatus, the high bar, to make a clean sweep of the six routines. He finished third of the three men in the grade on the high bar. His other five performances however, gave him a comfortable win in the event.

Apparatus finals involved the best gymnasts at the championships on each peice of equipment. The men’s competition differed from the women’s. The men competed towards an over-all total in each grade, while the women had individual winners for each apparatus. The apparatus finals are designed to exhibit the top gymnasts and provide extra competition in the various grades, which were decided from Wednesday to Friday.

The senior women’s apparatus finals produced the highest individual mark of the championships. Fiona Martin, of Canterbury, com-

peting on the uneven bars produced a mark of 9.65. Martin won that apparatus comfortably. On Friday she won the women’s elite title with her last routine, the floor exercise.

Martin and Vanessa Thornton, of Auckland, had been neck and neck as the women’s elite grade progressed. On the floor exercise Martin scored 9.1 and Thornton 9.0. Martin won the title by 0.09 of a point.

Thornton had some compensation when she won two of the apparatus finals on Saturday. She recorded 9.225 to win the vault and 9.15 to win the floor.

The open men’s apparatus final was won by Barry Hurley of Wangahui-Manawatu, who on Friday won the national title. He finished almost two points clear of Troy Mason,' of Auckland. The real battle in the grade was for third place. lain McLeod, oi Waikato, took third, but only by 0.025 of a point from Martin Taylor, of Auckland.

Glen Stewart, of Wellington, was another gymnast to complete a double. He won the national youth title on Friday and then won the

apparatus finals in the grade on Saturday. His performances on Saturday were of an exceptionally consistent standard. His lowest mark was 8.75 and his highest 9.2. His total for the 12 exercises was 108.162.

The junior girls' apparatus finals were shared by four gymnasts. Katrina Hunter (Auckland) won the vault, Deirdre Cornish (Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay) the uneven bars, Michelle Davies (Top of the South) the beam, and Nicola Jenkins (Auckland) the floor exercise.

The Top of the South is the Nelson-Marlborough region.
