Auckland extends record
PA Auckland Auckland had no problem retaining the Ranfurly Sheild at Eden Park on Saturday when it turned back the Wairarapa-Bush challenge, 50-7. The win makes Auckland the most successful team in the history of the trophy. It has now defended the shield 83 times — one more than Canter-
bury. Although WairarapaBush opened the scoring with a Mark Benton penalty the Auckland backline was soon in its stride. In the first half Mark Brooke Cowden, Greg Cooper, John Kirwan, Terry Wright, and Grant Fox all scored tries. Fox converted four of them for a 28-3 half-time lead.
Cooper, Wright, Kurt Sherlock, and Bernie McCahill added more tries after the break. There was consolation for Wairarapa Bush when right on the final whistle the flanker, Brett Harvey, charged across in the corner, , > ■ >'. There was also concern for Auckland. Andy Haden and Joe Stanley both
left the field in the second spell with injuries. In perfect, dry conditions before a crowd of about 15,000, Auckland rarely seemed troubled as its All Black-packed side ran in nine tries; finding the gaps — and there defence. Fox kicked seven conversions.
