Sir,—As the question of reparations to the Soviet Union by Germany was settled at the Crimean and Potsdam conferences, one is at a less to know how “the Soviets terrorised Eastern Europe between 1945 and 1958 demanding reparations,” as J. Simmonds claims (August 28). Another point of correction: N.A.T.O. was formed in 1949. Its menacingly aggressive behaviour necessitated the formation of the Warsaw Treaty alliance in 1955, and none too soon. The Hungarian counter-revolutionary uprising in 1956, incited and encouraged by N.A.T.0., attempted to restore the Horthy fascist regime in Hungary. J. Sim-

monds’s one-party-state fetishism is rendered nonsensical by South Africa, which has all the outward trappings of parliamentary democracy but is, in fact, a brutal fascist-racist regime whose army is fully engaged denying its black citizens all human rights, occupying Namibia illegally and attacking its northern neighbours on specious pretexts.—Yours, etc.,
