Nuclear stance

Sir,—S. Wrathall and Senator Richard Lugar express diametrically opposed views on “nuclear target New Zealand.” American Senators are not renowned for their targeting expertise, but then neither can a “moment’s reflection” have made an expert of Mr Wrathall. Our ban on nuclear warships frees us temporarily of but one type of potential nuclear target. Such ships could well be back in our ports in a crisis whether we like it or not. The signals intelligence station at Tangimoana and the American base at Deep Freeze could also be targets if the Soviets perceived they were involved in nuclear strategies. Senator Lugar believed that the Soviets targeted every country. That may be unrealistic; but it was documented some months ago that the United States had targeted several of its N.A.T.O. allies. A scorched-earth policy is just one of the many benefits of alliance membership. — Yours, etc.,

ROBERT L. LEONARD. August 29, 1986.
