Pregnant Midler excels in movie

David Hartnell's

hollywood

I’m not one to gossip, but if you are a Danny DeVito or Bette Midler fan there is a movie you will not want to miss. It is called “Ruthless People” and will open throughout New Zealand in early October. It is a wonderful black comedy and Midler looks better and better as the movie goes oh. In fact, she was pregnant with her first child while making the movie. How she got through some of those stunts I’ll never know. Go see the movie; it’s one of the best I’ve seen for a long time. With a little Hollywood magic you can now see old black and white movie classics in colour. But some mistakes can be made. Steve McQueen’s movie, “Wanted Dead Or Alive,” got a perfect colour job except for the McQueen eyes. They were tinted an interesting brown, as opposed to the baby blues he really had. Now the Steve McQueen fan club is picketing the theatres showing the movie, all because of his wrong eye colouring. Weight Watchers in the United States has started a weight loss plan for the stars. Some celebrities meet every week to be weighed in and chat ajbout their diet. There have been many stars who have lost weight with the help of “Weight Watchers” — Marie Osmond, Charles Nelson Reily and the Redgrave sisters, to name a few. The “Redheads International” organisation, which has more than 20,000 members in the United States, is delighted that Sarah Ferguson is a redhead too. The president, Stephen Douglas, sent a letter to the new Duchess of York asking her to become a member.

Already Lucille Balland Ann Margretare telling everyone they were trend setters with their hair colouring natural, or unnatural. They have had theirs for years. Lome Green’s new syndicated series, “The New Wilderness,” is continuing to roll along. Green says that at the last count the show was being seen in more than 140 stations all over the States. He says the one thing that makes it a great financial product, is that the animals never go out of date. “They never change clothes,” he says, “so you don’t have to worry about fashions. The show is always up to date no matter what year it screens.” I have just finished reading the book “Rock Hudson His Story,” which was apparently written by Rock Hudson and Sara Davidson. Hudson was supposed to have given exclusive deathbed interviews to Davidson, and she is meant to have been living in his house during the last months of his life. She says that the book has been drawn from interviews, letters, photo-

graphs, documents, scrapbooks which go back 30 years and is the only book published about Hudson that has his complete authorisation. However, I for one, find it difficult to believe that Hudson approved such a brok, especially as most of it was written after he died. I prefer to remember him from his many movies, and the kind words of his friends — not from a trashy book giving the socalled intimate details of his sex life.

Here is your useless bit of information for the week. Michael Caine has never done any fitness training in all his 53 years, but now the fitness bug has bitten and he has taken up exercise in a big way. He has just spent $200,000 on building a gym in his Beverly Hills home. I wonder if it’s tax deductible, but my lips are sealed.
