Beetham ultimatum on policy

PA Wellington The ousted leader of the Democratic Party, Mr Bruce Beetham — who had earlier indicated he might break away and form his own political organisation — has decided to stay with the party in the “interests of unity.”'

He threatened to immediately cut his ties if it moved its emphasis away from monetary reform,, and set several other conditions on his continued membership.

The rift between Mr Beetham, who led the party for 14 years until he was dumped last month, and the party hierarchy, may yet not have healed. The party’s new leader, the member of Parliament for Pakuranga, Mr Neil Morrison, said he did not accept any conditions.
