Westport girl stars

PA Wellington The South Island took a hammering in the inter-island table tennis clash at the Walter Nash Stadium on Thursday evening, but at least had the satisfaction of providing the star performer in Maxine Goldie, aged 15. Goldie, from Westport, was all aggression as she forced the experienced North Island

No. 1, Ann Gyongyos, on to the defensive early before bowing out, 22-20, 18-21, 1121. Goldie did even better in the reverse singles, heading off Eileen Hoete in straight games.

In spite of the efforts of Goldie, who won the New Zealand under-16 crown on Thursday, the South received an 11-1 lashing in the

women’s grade. There was worse in store. The South Islanders could not cope with the skills of the top two northerners, Alan Pedly, and Murray Darroch, in the men’s grade, and copped a 12-0 hiding. Darroch, aged 25, was in fine form, defeating Ling Nan Ming, 21-17, 21-15, and Grant McCarrol, 21-14, 21-16. The South Island appeared to retrieve a little self-respect in the boys' under-18 grade, which they took without losing a match. But there was even a North Island tinge to that victory; the top two in the winning lineup, Gary Traill and David Pyper, are recent North.lsland exports. The veteran men featured in the only close result of the night. The North Island squared up at 6-6 by winning the final doubles match of the tie.
