State cleaners ‘excluded’
About 3000 cleaners in the Public Service had been excluded from the provisions allowing permanent part-time work in Government departments, said the Canterbury regional secretary of the Public Service Association, Mr John McKenzie. The Minister of State Services, Mr Rodger, announced new procedures this week for permanent part-time work in the Public Service. Mr McKenzie said that cleaners and tea attendants had been excluded from the provisions and this was intolerable. He said that the 3000 Government cleaners all worked part-time and were employed by the Internal Affairs Department. They would not be able to enjoy the benefits of a permanent position in the Public Service that others would enjoy.
