Pupils fall ill

PA Auckland Five Penrose High School pupils are in hospital with meningococcal meningitis. Health authorities, who describe the outbreak as exceptional, have yet to establish the cause. “Even one case is of concern, but to have five cases together in a school is most unusual,” said the Auckland Deputy Medical Officer of Health, Dr Shirley Ip, last evening. Six people have died from meningitis in the Auckland area this year. Late last year, an outbreak of the disease claimed four lives in South Auckland.

The Penrose pupils, three boys and two girls, are reported to be “doing well.” Four are in Green Lane Hospital. The fifth, who fell ill while on holiday, is in Kaitaia Hospital. The school’s principal, Mrs Ann Dunphy, called the outbreak bizarre for there were few apparent connections between the pupils. Two were close friends, but the others were in different classes.

Dr Ip said no pother pupils had shown Symptoms.
