Goodwill visit by H.M.A.S. Cook
H.M.A.S. Cook, now on a four-day goodwill visit to Lyttelton, is commanded, appropriately, by Commander Alan Cook. H.M.A.S. Cook is the first ship in the Royal Australian Navy designed specifically for oceanographic work. Commissioned in 1980, the 2600-ton vessel carries a crew of 11 officers and 110 ratings, and up to 13 scientists. She has an array of sophisticated survey and navigational equipment, including a narrow-beam echo sounder, one of the first of its kind in the world. H.M.A.S. Cook berthed at Lyttelton yesterday and is to sail next Tuesday. The ship is not open to the public. However,- arrangements may be made with the resident naval officer in Christ- . church, Lieutenant-Comman-der David Watson, for guided tours by organised groups of up to 40 persons.
