Hurley supreme in open event
Barry Hurley, of Wan-ganul-Manawatu, was a convincing winner of the national open event at the New Zealand gymnastics championships in Cowles Stadium yesterday.
Hurley’s strength and consistency on the floor and the high bar in both compulsory and voluntary routines were sufficient to overcome the handicap of a relatively disappointing pommel routine.
The outstanding performance of the day came from a Wellington competitor, Glen Stewart, In the national youth event. Stewart won by more than three points from Richard Kennedy, of Auckland.
Stewart was the only competitor to score 18 points over the combined voluntary and compulsory routines in the six disciplines. His best efforts were in the compulsory exercises, where he achieved 9.250 in the rings, the vault, the parallel bars and the high bar.
Canterbury gained a gymnastic quinella in the
grade two competition, with Sara Rees and Charlotte Carlsen taking first and second places and, for good measure, Jody Isherwood came in fourth. Over-all results.— MEN National youth: G.
