Cheese, N-policy promoted
by
JOHN HUTCHISON
San Francisco A cheese shop in nearby Berkeley which estimates its annual sales at SUSI million a year is promoting New Zealand cheese and New Zealand’s nuclear policy. • The Cheese Board, owned collectively by the 21 people who work at it, is featuring two New Zealand Cheddars, and a prominent statement that the shop supports New Zealand’s stance on nuclear arms. “We want to demonstrate that not everyone supports the United States Administration’s stand,” said Steve Sutcher, spokeman for the collective.
“For the United States to abrogate the treaty was pretty severe.”
He said the idea was adopted at a meeting of the members, "quite an active group.” At his request the New Zealand trade and tourist offices in San * Francisco have supplied the Cheese Board with materials including banners saying: “Try a taste of New Zealand,” and travel promotion literature.
The shop regularly stocked more than 200 foreign and domestic cheeses and was the largest such retailer on the American west coast, Mr Sutcher said.
