Judge adjourns parole hearing

PA Wellington A convicted murderer’s chances of remaining free may hinge on the attitude of the Parole Board to his taking out an alcohol prohibition order. Mr Justice Ellis, in the High Court in Wellington adjourned an application by the Secretary for Justice to have Karl Bremner, aged 53, a prison inmate (formerly John Frederick Gillies), recalled to serve the remainder of his life sentence for a conviction for murder. Mr Justice Ellis adjourned the application to enable the Crown solicitor, Mr Jim Larsen, to obtain from the Secretary for Justice information on the attitude of the Parole Board to Bremner’s parole and to a suggestion to a proposal that he take out a prohibition order to abstain from alcohol. His Honour indicated that he was interested in the probable attitude of the Parole Board to Bremner’s remaining in the community under those conditions. Bremner, represented by Mr Bruce Buckton, has spent 21 years in jail.
