TV change rejected
PA Wellington Aotearoa Broadcasting System’s move to change its application for a third television channel has been rejected by the Broadcasting Tribunal. The tribunal refused to let A.B.S. change its application from one for a third television network to one for a programme warrant allowing it to broadcast programmes on another applicant’s
stations. Impact TV had offered to fund and broadcast Maori programmes made by A.B.S. Impact had applied to amend its application to take this into account. The tribunal also refused this application, but it did agree to hear evidence from Impact about its arrangement with A.B.S. In its judgment, the
tribunal said the change A.B.S. sought was so different from its original application that a new application would have to be filed. Maori broadcasters intend to continue their application for a third channel warrant, said the chairman of Aotearoa Broadcasting System, Professor Whata Winiata, later.
