Barusha gets up
PA Te Awamutu Barusha finished strongly to get up and beat the pacemaker, Hopscotch, in the Bay Of Plenty Fertiliser International, first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Waipa Racing Club’s meeting yesterday. The race was the second of two for international apprentice riders. Barusha was ridden by Shane Treweek, representing the Auckland district apprentice school. Hopscotch, which was well clear at the turn, had the services of the Hastings rider, Mark Heaney, and third placed, Capalaba, was ridden by Rodney Griffiths, a visiting apprentice from Melbourne. The first of the races for international apprentices, the T.H.C. Waitomo resort hotel handicap, was
won by Midnight Row, which disputed the lead throughout, and gave his Canterbury rider, Gary Taylor, a good win. Midnight Row scored by a nose from Quisiera, which finished well for the Japanese horseman, KaYamada. An outsider, Sabie, was a clear third in the hands of the Malaysian representative Ismail Ismadi.
Little Luci, handy throughout, took the lead on the home turn in the “Rapido” Handicap and held out a strong challenge from Biddy’s Star to win by a long head. An outsider, Sansong, fought oh for third. Roimac, which had charge at the 600 m, weakened to fourth, in front of Royal Plaid, Epergne, and the favourite, Noble Heritage, which led down the back straight.
