Marine Division puzzled by find
The Marine Division is mystified by the discovery of a piece of fibreglass, which could be part of a coastal fishing vessel, on the New Brighton foreshore yesterday morning. “It could be part of a fishing boat — we really don’t know,” said the division’s senior surveyor in Christchurch, Mr Jack Weld. The piece of fibreglass, is about 4m by 1.5 m, has insulation on one side, is painted yellow, has hardwood belting through the middle, and stainless steel bolts. No fishing boat has been reported missing.
The piece of fibreglass which has jagged edges and was probably washed ashore in heavy seas during Wednesday night, was found by a jogger yesterday morning on the beach opposite Hawke Street
Mr Weld said that someone might have put the fibreglass on the beach as a hoax. The debris was not likely to be from a Japanese or Korean fishing vessel as those vessels were not made of fibreglass.
The division was keen to hear from anyone who might know where the debris came from, he said.
